MFA Thesis
For completion of the MFA degree, students are required to write a polished draft that is ready to be prepared for publication. The thesis consists of a novel, short story collection, or excerpt that is a minimum of 100 pages.
A Focused Curriculum
The MFA program requires 36 credit hours:
- 4 Writing workshops (16 credits) Opportunity to take one on-campus workshop over the summer (4 credits) with permission of the graduate program director
- 2 Literature classes (8 credits) Opportunity to take the on-campus “Teaching College Composition” class in lieu of one Literature class with permission of the graduate program director
- 2 Publishing classes (8 credits)
- Thesis project (4 credits)
Required Courses
Workshops: Students are required to take 16 credits in PF 610 Writing Workshop in Popular Fiction. This runs in multiple sections each semester.
Literature: Students are required to take 8 credits from the following literature seminar classes (students may take PF 616 more than once):
- PF 615 Seminar in Popular Fiction
- PF 616 Topics in the History of Popular Forms
Publishing: Students are required to take the following publishing classes:
- PF 630 Introduction to the Publishing Process for Writers
- PF 631 Topics in Writing and Publishing
