MASTER OF ARTS IN THEATER EDUCATION: LICENSURE
Emerson’s MA in Theatre Education: Licensure is a 40-credit program that equips aspiring educators with the skills and credentials to teach theatre in PK-12 classrooms and after-school programs. Whether you’re a recent graduate or a career changer passionate about theatre, this program is designed to help you land a rewarding career in education. You'll gain hands-on experience, learning and practicing the foundations of teaching in real school settings.

Curriculum and Licensure
Students will explore foundational theories and practical methodologies for teaching theatre in diverse educational settings. This program is accredited by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, ensuring high standards for licensure preparation. Upon completion, you will be qualified to apply for initial licensure as a theatre educator in Massachusetts.
Complete the program in two years as a full-time student, or three to five years as a part-time student. The curriculum consists of 40 credits including:
- 12 credits (3 courses) of Required Foundation Courses
- 8 credits (2 courses) of Core Courses
- 20 credits (5 courses) of Theatre Education, Teacher Development Courses
Requirements for Licensure
- Completion of all coursework and field experiences
- Permission to advance to the student teaching practicum
- A portfolio review upon completing your practicum
- Passing the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL)
Graduates are well-prepared to pursue teaching opportunities in public schools, after-school programs, or further their studies with a doctoral degree. This program offers a direct path to initial public school licensure in Massachusetts, empowering you to bring the magic of theatre into the classroom.

Graduate students take most classes in the Paramount Center’s rehearsal studios. The Center also includes the Robert J. Orchard Stage and the Jackie Liebergott Black Box Theatre.
Students also take classes and have performance opportunities in the Greene and Semel theaters within the Tufte Performance and Production Center.
The restored Cutler Majestic Theatre attracts unique cultural and entertainment programs that students can attend year-round.
